What is a barcode inventory system?

A barcode inventory system is the combination of three things: barcode labels on your products (each encoding a SKU), a scanner to read them (a dedicated device or just a phone camera), and software that updates stock levels with every scan. Instead of typing SKUs and quantities — the step where human error lives — receiving, picking, counting and shipping become point-and-scan.

The payoff is accuracy and speed: scanning removes typos and mis-picks almost entirely, counts that took a weekend take an afternoon, and stock levels stay trustworthy enough to actually automate reordering.

Modern reality check: you probably don't need hardware. Phone cameras scan perfectly well for small-to-mid volumes, and cloud inventory software (VNDLY included) has scanning built into the browser — the label printer is often the only equipment purchase.
